Extension Turfgrass Maintenance Essential Elements

چکیده

Actively growing turfgrasses usually contain more than 75 percent water. Their “dry” matter holds 16 nutrient elements considered essential for survival, flowering and/or seed production. Turfgrasses receive three of these, carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O), from carbon dioxide in the air and from water. The remaining essential elements are minerals, most often supplied by the soil. Healthy turfgrass roots are ideally suited for their uptake from moist soils. Root systems are usually fibrous, extensive and have a very large surface area. Once inside the roots, many of the mineral elements are transported through a vascular system, the xylem, to other areas of the plant.

tains more nitrogen than any other element. Fourth, nitrogen is a very dynamic element in the soil system. Its concentration is constantly changing, usually decreasing. The other essential elements are significantly more stable in soils. Nitrogen, therefore, must be routinely added to turfgrass to maintain a soil level sufficient for turfgrass growth. An ideal nitrogen fertilization maintenance...

Nickel aNd TurFgraSS growTh : all you Need To kNow

T urfgrass managers are always trying to leverage acceptable conditions with minimal inputs (water, nutrients, and pesticides). Maintaining optimal plant nutrition is the foundation of sustaining healthy turfgrasses that require fewer inputs. Liebig’s Law of the Minimum states that plant growth is controlled not by the total amount of resources (nutrients) available, but by the most scarce reso...

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOIL MICROBIAL ACTIVITIES Microbiology of Turf grass Soil

Turfgrass soils vary considerably in physical and chemical composition. However, regardless of their properties, most contain a vast array of living organisms, ranging from larger creatures such as earthworms and insects, to microscopic invertebrates, bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, yeasts, algae and protozoa. All of these organisms affect turfgrass health in important ways. However, perhaps th...
